Three charged with drug offenses after traffic stop

Following a traffic stop on Feb. 14, three residents of Kentucky are facing several drug charges and are being held in the McCracken County Regional Jail. The three were arrested after a 1:20 a.m. traffic stop for an equipment violation when police stopped the 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser. During the stop, the police assessed the driver and determined that she was driving the vehicle while under the influence of methamphetamine.

After determining that the driver was intoxicated, the vehicle and its passengers were searched by the police. The police claimed that they discovered a variety of drug paraphernalia within the car, most containing some trace of methamphetamine or suspected meth; the paraphernalia present included hypodermic needles and syringes. Both passengers also had drug paraphernalia items in their possession, police said, as well as methamphetamine.

The driver and both passengers were arrested and taken to the county jail. The 19-year-old driver was charged with driving under the influence as a first offense as well as possession of a controlled substance in the first degree as a first offense and buying or possessing drug paraphernalia. She was also charged with failure to produce an insurance card and failing to illuminate her rear license plate. Both of the passengers, an 18-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, where charged with possession of a controlled substance in the first degree as a first offense and buying or possessing of drug paraphernalia. In all three cases, the controlled substance referred to was methamphetamine.

People in Kentucky who are charged with drug offenses may face serious, lifelong consequences, including expensive fines, jail or prison time and a criminal record. A criminal defense attorney may be able to help people facing drug charges mount a strong defense by challenging evidence or police conduct.
